  • Back Story

Beloved daughter of her father, Grainne from her earliest years dreamt that she will follow his footsteps, joining him on his ships and taking over when he retires.Dubhdara didn’t want to agree to it though, despite letting the girl have her way in all other matters. Annoyed, he made up an excuse that her hair would get tangled in the ropes. But Grainne was a stubborn little lady, and without a second thought cut all of it off. Instead of anger, this amused her father and he took her with him, starting the girl’s education as a sailor.
This didn’t last for long though. As soon as she was of age, her father married her off, handing the responsibility for her antics to her husband, and getting more connections for his family in the process. Grainne wasn’t happy in this marriage, not having anything in common with the husband who expected her to stay at home and bear him children. She wouldn’t have any of this, ofcourse. She learned even more of seafaring, and became such good a captain that her husband stopped objecting, since his people respected her as a leader already.
She gave him three children, Owen and Maeve who were as good as she could imagine, and Murrough, who took the worst from both of his parents, and eventually became the cause of his brother’s death.
Dónal died in battle eventually, and Grainne recaptured his castle, then held it steady before retreating to her home, taking with her the people of Flaithbheartaigh who still saw her as their leader, as well as Maeve’s husband who joined her as crew on one of her ships, becoming her best friend, and later a lover.
That’s when her adventure with piracy started.
Her second marriage was a continuation of that move. She wanted more power, more people and more ships, as well as a nicely located dock. That’s why she approached Bourke. She married him for one year, and waited for him to be outside of castle grounds before dismissing him, making the land her property. The now ex-husband found this more humorous than anything else, and despite losing his property, remained Grainne’s friend.
But she wasn’t young anymore. There was still so much to do, and Grainne started feeling her years. That’s when she became obsessed with idea of eternal life. She spent decades on ship looking for the famed fountain of youth, finding dozens of different treasures, including one of the Ireland’s most famous swords, but she never managed to locate what she was really looking for. Her lands were troubled by her enemies, and even though she returned to help, even that wasn’t able to distract her for long. An old woman, she was ready to angrily give up, when she met a russian sorcerer who sparked her belief again. He couldn’t give her perfect immortality like she wanted, but he told her how to obtain an imperfect one, teaching her how to weave a soul satchel. She would bind her soul to it, and then on her death, reconstruct from it in a once again young body. Not exactly what she wished for, but this was close enough - she now had her eternal life, and all the time that she wanted to collect her fortune. After her first death she made sure to stay away from the place of her birth, and only returned to Ireland when her story was nothing but a legend.
